The Alpine Club of Canada camp for 1908 was situated near there and Byron photographed the guides climbing. Robson is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. It was the focus of intense interest from mountaineers of Canada, Britain and the USA in the early twentieth century. Conrad Kain wrote of Mt. Robson in his auto-biography, Where the Clouds Can Go, “In all my mountaineering in various countries, I have climbed only a few mountains that were hemmed in with more difficulties. Mount Robson is one of the most dangerous expeditions I have made. The horses were occasionally swept away and had to be rescued. The horse packs were not watertight, a major oversight in planning this trip. Those containing photographic gear and film, the radio, and food suffered repeated dunks in the icy, silt laden waters. Most of their sugar and salt dissolved in the North Saskatchewan River. Lewis Freeman wrote: “Then followed eight days of futile waiting—an interval in some ways more trying than the worst spells of travel in mud and water.,,Then suddenly and without warning, the veiling clouds fell away like a parted curtain. If so, Indian paintbrush qualifies. Castilleja, of which the plant in this photograph is one of two hundred or so species, is native in northern eco-systems around the world. The lower elevation orange paintbrush is also known as prairie fire. Many of the mountains and features surrounding the lake were named by author, botanist and photographer, Mary Schäffer Warren, who is credited with being, in 1907, the first white woman to see the lake. Named 1n 1897 by Norman Collie for British climber Douglas William Freshfield, the Freshfields contain one of the largest glacial systems in Western Canada, crowned by jagged 10,000 to 11,000-foot peaks which surround tiny Niverville Meadows where we camped. Not so the glorious wood lily, or red lily, Lilium philadelphicum. Like so many mountain wildflowers, it also grows across the prairies with no respect for ideas of ‘native’ or ‘territory’.
